Kansas City Bosses rally in final quarter to outlast LA Chargers on 'Thursday Night Football'
The first regular season game of "Thursday Night Football" on Amazon Prime Video did not disappoint. The Los Angeles Chargers went into the AFC West showdown riding a two-game winning streak in Kansas City, however their good fortune has ended for the current year.
The Chiefs blocked Justin Herbert just outside their end zone on a kickoff in the final quarter to take a 24-17 lead and never relinquish it.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a rough presentation. He was 24 of 35 passing for 235 yards and two scores in a 27-24 triumph over the Chargers.
The triumph gave the Bosses their fifth 2-0 start in the last six seasons. Mahomes went on to extend his career record to 22-3 against AFC West opponents.
Jaylen Watson's first NFL interception is his sixth
Herbert didn't make too many terrible throws Thursday night, but he went with a terrible pick at the finish line.Herbert believed Everett had an inside influence, but in that frame of mind there didn't appear to be any miscommunication between the quarterback and tight end. Tenderfoot Jaylen Watson took Herbert's pass and carried it to the house 99 yards.
"The ball just wrapped around my chest and I brought it back home. It was a weird slant. I'm just so grateful to be here and I'm glad. I didn't have the foggiest idea what to do when I got into the end zone ," Watson said. "It's a second I'll remember forever.
It was Watson's most memorable capture and was the definitive game in the challenge. The pick six gave the Chiefs their most memorable lead of the game and they didn't relinquish it.
"I'm so happy with those young guys that are under protection. You just don't realize it until you're in that situation," Mahomes said. "For protection to keep us around, I think that's a big, huge step in the right direction."
However, attack-tuned bosses need air instability
Nine unique players caught passes from Mahomes for the second week in a row. The Bosses quarterback has to show composure in the pocket and has really worked hard to make plays off the script.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce managed five carries for 51 yards. Eight players had at least two camps.
"It's going to be everybody," Mahomes said of Kansas City's fair raid. “It won't be one person.
The Chargers defense didn't make it easy for Kansas City's offense. The Chiefs have to make sensitive plays against great safeties.
Chiefs WR Justin Watson turned an out-of-position Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson for a 41-yard score on the second of last quarter. That ended up being Kansas City's longest play of the night.
The Bosses missed the upside danger and huge playmaking capacity from previous wide receiver Tyreek Slope.
Herbert took a major strain on the ribs in the last quarter and needed to leave the game. Herbert returned, but was visibly upset by the success.
Herbert was 33 of 48 passing for 334 yards and had three scores and one interception.
Chargers mentor Brandon Staley said after the game that Herbert was "fine" and didn't expect his physical issue to be prolonged.
